The direct lineof the old Earls of Mar failed in 1374; and in 1391Sir Thomas Erskine claimed the earldom in rightof his wife. Their descendant John, the sixth Lord 70 CLACK^NIANNAXSHIRE Erskine, received the title of Earl of Mar in the most interesting member of this family isthe Jacobite Earl, born at Alloa House in 1675. Hewas a Privy Councillor under William III ; in Annes. The Jacobite Earl of Mar reign he changed sides more than once ; he was one ofthe chief promoters of the Union of 1707, which he soonprofessed to regret ; tor years before Annes dr;ath he was ROLL OF HONOUR 71 in communication with the Pretender, but he was en-thusiastically ready to welcome the Hanoverian King,Mars extraordinary versatility, even in an age whenchanging sides was no rarity, gained liim the nickname ofBobbing John. George I deprived him of his post asSecretary of State and of the hereditary guardianship ofStirling Castle. Under the Pretenders orders, Mar,August 1715, left London for Scotland to stir up the 6th September the Jacobite standard was raisedat Braemar. Perth was seized on the i6th, but theindecisive battle of Shcriffmuir, 13th November, provedfatal to the Jacobites.
