The main vesicle is brought in contact with the chorion bymeans of a small secondary vesicle; both are inclosed with alayer of mesoderm within wrhich are numerous blood islands. 156 MALL. [Vol. XIX. The smaller vesicle is lined with a layer of large spindle-shaped cells. Migrating cells are within the cavities of bothvesicles, and are also scattered throughout the surrounding-magma. There are no blood-vessels in the chorion. The syncytiallayer is diminished, but is well formed upon the tips of thevilli. Here it often accumulates in layers, forming Fig. 2ic.—Section through the vesicle and chorion. X 25 times. Thesecond vesicle between the larger one and the chorion appears tobe the stem with a dilated allantois, although it is not attached tothe chorion. No. 24. Chorion, 21 x 16 x 5 mm. From Dr. C. O. Miller, Baltimore. The ovum was covered completely with villi which brancha number of times. Upon opening the specimen it was foundthat the ccelom was filled completely with magma reticuleof moderate density. No trace of an embryo could be time to time I made renewed search and finally decidedto cut the entire specimen into sections. After staining itwith cochineal a small nodule became visible when the speci-men was placed in direct sunlight. This, with a piece ofchorion upon which it lay, was cut into serial sections 20microns thick. The walls of the vesicle are composed of three layers, theouter being greatly thickened at points, but retains sharp No. i.] ORIGIN OF HUMAN MONSTERS. 157
