Matochina Fortress, Archaeological remains, Turkish-Bulgarian border, Balkans, Bulgaria

From Matochina fortress only the citadel has been preserved till now. A wonderful view reveals from its 18 m high walls. From the outside fortress only hardly visible remains are left. The ruins of the citadel in its today’s form date back to XII-XIV century. Some scientists assume that here was situated the famous Bukelon fortress mentioned in connection with the battle of Adrianopolis between the Romans and the Goths in 378 when the Romans were defeated.
