Illustration of the red giant star Kepler-56 devouring its two planets Kepler-56b and Kepler-56c. The star is around times the size of our Sun at the moment, but is expanding as it dies. In 130 to 155 million years this expansion will lead to the destruction of the orbiting planets. The Kepler-56 is around 3,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation Cygnus.
