Thick creepers of the ivy plant wind around the trunk of an old tree in one of the UK' old forests. Although wound tightly about the tree the ivy can not really harm an established tree as some may seem to think, it does not "strangle" or "suffocate" the tree but may create a micro climate where it is thick and allow other parasitic plants in to the trees bark etc.
