The first locomotive superintendent of theGreat Western line was Daniel Gooch, who hadlearnt his business at Stephensons Vulcan Mr. Gooch entered the service of the GreatWestern Railway, Brunei had ordered engines fromNewcastle. Mr. Goochs first engines were of the Fury type, some with 7 feet driving wheels, and otherswith 6 feet drivers. In the first the heating areawas 700 square feet and in the second 608 squarefeet. In one feature some of Goochs earlier engineswere unique ; they were fitted with steel was then dear and could not be afforded forengine and tender bodies. The results were notice-able in the life of the wheels, some of which ran300,000 miles before being retyred.
