The Liceo Vittorio Emanuele II school, oldest of the city of Palermo and Sicily, was established in 1549 as the Board of Studies at the hands of the Jesuits; had as its first rector of the French theologian Nicholas P. Lanojo and the first location in a body of homes owned by Don Sigismondo Platamone, at the church of Our Lady of Mercy. The initial site was located near the church of St. Francis of Assisi; In 1586 the Jesuits bought in Cassaro (now called Corso Vittorio Emanuele), near the Cathedral, where there is the current branch of the Institute, some of the houses with the aim of leaving to the Board. This new office was inaugurated on August 15, 1588.
