Remarks.—The obscurity of the type species, Lysianassa costae Milne Edwards (1830, see Stebbing, 1906, for reference), with its type locality in the Gulf of Naples, apparently has led to a conception of the genus based on L. plumosa Boeck, as analyzed by Sars (1895) "mistakenly" under the name of L. costae. Stebbing (1906) did not consider any of the species described from the Mediterranean subse- quent to 1830 to be L. costae, although Pirlot (1933) believed L. costae to be a senior synonym of L. bispinosa Delia Valle (1893).
