The Gabled House in Cotswold wool town of Burford, Oxfordshire, England. A 1600s Jacobean facade and 1500s Tudor doorway hide early-1400s timbers.
Burford, Oxfordshire, England, UK: historic properties on the west side of The Hill, the upper High Street of this former wool town in the Cotswolds, include The Gabled House. Its Early to Mid-1600s stone façade in mellow limestone and Tudor doorway with plank front door conceal timber framing and beams that show the house is much older than it looks from the outside. Dendrochronology (the science of tree-ring dating) has proved that the wood came from trees felled between 1432 and the Spring of 1459, during the reign of King Henry VI. This was the period when England was plunged into devastating civil conflict, the Wars of the Roses, which were fought between the (white rose) House of York and (red rose) House of Lancaster over the rightful succession to the Throne.
