At 125th Street the West Side line of the underground rapid transit system emerges from the subway and crossesthe Manhattan valley on a great flying-arch steel viaduct to 135th Street, where it again enters the tunnel, and at 190th Street is more than 100 feet below thesurface. The Manhattan Viaduct is a splendid example of American bridgework, and in common with all sections of this greatest engineering feat of the newcentury, is built to last for all time under the severest strains.
