While in the former place Mrs. Austin was converted to the faith of theChurch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized January 5, 1848, byElder Benjamin Johnson, while two years later Mr. Austin was also received into thechurch. Soon after their conversion they became imbued with a strong desire to jointhe main body of the church in Utah. This seemed a hopeless undertaking owing to thestraightened financial circumstances of the family but Mrs. Austin was a woman of great f. He per-suaded Mrs. Austin to buy a number of bundles to sell to her neighbors, offering her asmall profit on each bundle. Mrs. Austin undertook the work and was quite then purchased other straw, which she sold profitably, and from this small beginningshe built up a business that resulted in the establishment of a store. This she con-ducted successfully and it aided materially in promoting the income of the family. By1866 they had saved a sufficient sum to send two of their children, Harriet and George,to Utah. Two years later the father decided to emigrate, thinking not only to enjoythe religious advantages but also to have better opportunities of caring for his weeks before starting out upon his expected trip Bar
