Golden Fire Hydrant, Mission District, San Francisco, California

This was the only hydrant in the neighborhood functioning after the 1906 earthquake. Its use succeeded in stopping the fires from destroying more of the Mission District. The "horse ball" at the top of the hydrant allowed firemen to tie off their horses when fighting a fire.
