Sir Humphrey Gilbert (), English adventurer and explorer. Gilbert was born at Galmpton in Devon and was educated at Eton and Oxford University. He served in the Army during the plantations in Ireland in 1566, leading the seizure of large parts of the country. In 1570 he returned to England, married and became Member of Parliament for Plymouth. He was obsessed with finding a way to China through the famed north-west passage and in 1583 arrived in Newfoundland, claiming it and the land around it for the British crown. Gilbert died when his ship was lost in a storm on the journey home. This engraving first was published in Heroologia Anglica by Henry Holland, printed at Arnhem in 1620.
