Beneath is the genius of British literature lamenting the loss of the historian; and upon the ends of the base, which bears the inscription-table, are sculptured figures of Clemency and Philosophy. Sir James Mackintosh has now been dead nearly a quarter of a century; so that the above memorial must be regarded as a tardy tribute to his attainments and private worth'.
