Grade-one listed Elizabethan Wollaton Hall was built for Sir Francis Willoughby. The hall was said to have been paid for with coal from the Wollaton pits, owned by Willoughby. The hall was built between 1580 and 1588 and designed by architect Robert Smythson, who also designed Hardwick Hall
