Recovery after bone lengthening surgery. Girl with crutches recovering after undergoing distraction osteogenesis surgery on her right leg. This procedure involved cutting the femur (thigh bone) and inserting a telescopic nail into the shaft. The nail is then extended by about 1 millimetre a day over several months, which induces new bone growth in the resulting space between the cut ends of the bone.
