I., Feb. 34, 1834,son of George Curtis, a business man, who was de-scended from Ephraim Curtis, the first settler ofWorcester, Mass. On his mothers side George Wil-liam came from a family devoted to public aflEairs,his maternal grandfather, James Burrill, Jr., havingbeen a U. S. Senator from Rhode Island and chiefjustice of that state. After ac-quiring the rudiments of an ed-ucation in his native city he wassent to a private school at Ja-maica Plain, Mass. In 1838 hisfather removed to New Yorkcity, and bought the residencein Washington Place which wasafterward occupied by his half-brother. Dr. Edward Curtis, andGeorge William entered thecounting-room of a New Yorkcommercial house to fit himselffor a business career. Commer-cial pursuits proving uusuited tohis tastes, after a year or more hewithdrew from them, and in1848, in company with his elderbrother, joined the noted BrookFarm Association, at AVest Rox-bury
