In 1617 the Pilgrims inLeyden resolved to found a newcolony, and preparations were madeto sail for America. There weremany difficulties in the way, andthree years went by before the exileswere ready. In the mean time theiragents in England had secured theMayflower, and they had fitted out inHolland a smaller vessel called theSpeedwell, which they anchored inDelftshaven. On July 21, 1620, thePilgrims held their memorable day of. IN DELFT STREETS. the Pilgrims went on board theSpeedwell. The bystanders, saysWinslow, accompanied them to theship, but were not able to speakone to another for the abundance ofsorrow to part. Heads were uncov-ered ; Robinson, with tremulous voice,commended the Pilgrims to the Rulerof the ocean; and the Speedzvell has-tened away before a strong wind tojoin the Mayflower at stirring chapter in the worldshistory, which binds Holland, Eng-land and America so indissolubly to- 134 DELFT AND DELFT WARE.
