Kealakekua, Hawaii - Members of the Kona Historical Society, helped by tourists, bake bread in a Portuguese stone oven. The oven is a reproduction of the typical ovens used by Portuguese immigrants who came to the region in the 1880’s. A fire is lit in the oven four hours before baking begins. Coals are then removed and heat from the stones bakes more than 30 loaves at a time.
