Locomotive boiler construction; a practical treatise for boilermakers, boiler users and inspectors .. . he die A entirely through and thenwith a chain or rope passing on a pulley P holds the diein this position. The matrix is now returned, the four auxiliary cyl-inders are lowered, the main piston is lowered and thesheet is removed. The internal piston is now raised toreceive A and is then returned to its original position. The gusset sheet-shown in Plate 2 will not be ex-actly as shown on the boiler after being welded, for thereason that when the sheet C comes from the mill theelements will be straight lines and as the sheet must joincylindrical sheets, front and back, it must be flanged sothat the sheet will be cylindrical at these points. This isdone by heating about one-third of the circumference ofone end in a fire and then flanging this portion by handso as to fit the other sheets. The drop of the gusset Hshown in Fig. 40 being known, a straight edge is laidacross the top of the sheet as shown so as to obtain thisamount. When we have a sheet like the upper part of the 83 84 Flanging. gusset in Plate 3, the back portion is flanged first. shows the cross section as it would appear in the 42 shows the shape of this sheet after it comes fromthe press. It will be noticed in this sheet that the flangedportion does not extend all around and for this reasonthe upper and lower dies are made to slide upon each
