Deforestation due to the mountain pine beetle, artwork. The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) is found in the forests of western North America. It kills pine trees by boring underneath the bark, laying its eggs, and feeding on the phloem tissue. Two weeks later (scale across bottom), the tree will be severely damaged or dead, and its pines will have turned red. As of 2008, large outbreaks have killed large swathes of forest in British Columbia and Colorado. It is estimated that by 2020, the resulting deforestation will have released millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
