During the lastcentury, an English family by thename of Gage^ obtained a numberof fruit trees among the monks ofChartreuse, near Paris. Among themAvas a tree of this plum, which, hav-ing lost its name, was called by thegardener the Green Gage. It is pro-nounced, by Lindley, the best plumin England, and we must admit thatwe have no superior to it here. Green Gage. The Green Gage is a very short jointed, slow-growing tree, ofspreading and rather dwai-fish habit. It is an abundant andpretty regular bearer, though the fruit is a little liable to crackupon the tree in wet seasons. Branches smooth. Buds with large shoulders.
