Fans cheering the team onto the pitch for the last game of the season with Boro already relegated Boro 3, Norwich 3 May 8th 1993

This image is part of a project to record the experience of watching football from a standing terrace. After the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, the Taylor Report recommended that all grounds in the top two English divisions become all seater. As a Middlesbrough fan I realised that Ayresome Park, and dozens of similar grounds up and down the country, would either change beyond recognition or disappear. With this in mind I took my camera onto the Holgate End of Ayresome Park during the 1992/93 season to try to record the experience of watching football from a standing terrace. The photographs also reflect the events of the season. 1992/93 was the inagural Premier League season, the first stage of SKY TV and others pumping vast amounts of money into the game, which resulted in the influx of star foriegn players, and an explosion in players wages. After a good start to the season Boro had already been relegated before the final game. In hindsight these photographs also record football as it had been for 100 years, but is no longer. See also
