The patents cover peculiar methods ofconstructing the rails and chairs to hold the same,ind keys to fasten the rails to the chairs. Daft system, which is in successful operation atBaltimore, Md.; Los Angeles, Cal.; Mansfield,Ohio; Ashbury Park, N. J.; Pittsburg, Pa.; andIthaca, N. Y. Although the utilization of elec-tricity as a motive power commenced in Europe—Fontaines haphazard discovery at the A^ienna Exposition of 1873 may be said to be the birthof dynamo-electric power—America has takenthe lead in its development. And the Daft peo-ple, and those who co-operate with them, havethe greatest number of electric street railwaysin actual operation—with the exception of theVan Depoele electric company, who count someeleven lines operated with their apparatus atpresent. The Daft system stands next—inthe number of electric railways already built—and it is highly spoken of. The earliest permanent application of theDaft system of electric propulsion to a recog-nized commercial enterprise occurred in thesummer of 1885, the subject being the Hamp-den
