A practical treatise on fractures and dislocations . l dressings on the following day, or when the first dressinghas become solid, the patient is laid upon a bed composed of two or three mat-tresses, or of a sufficient number of folded blankets, his loins, shoulders, andhead resting upon the bed thus constructed, while his hips, thighs, and legsextend beyond the bed. In order to support the lower portion of the body in FRACTURES OF THE SHAFT OF THE FEMUR, 401 this position a piece of a cotton roller, three inches wide and two yards long, having been lubricated with sweet oil, is passed under the pelvis, and tied aboveto a bar supported by a stanchion, as seen in the woodcut (Fig. 244). Variousmethods of supporting the pelvis have been devised, but this is the most simpleand efficacious. The piece of bandage is directed to be softened with oil, inorder that it may be easily withdrawn when the dressing is hard ; but if it hasnot formed a cord this may not be necessary, and it is sometimes cut off and leftinclosed with the splint. Fig. Extension during application of plaster of Paris. The iron stanchion, wrapped with woollen cloth, is now brought against theperineum, and the pulleys made fast to the foot by a noose of cotton extension is made sufficient to support and steady the limb, but notsufficient to overcome the shortening.
