Last week clean sales continued at all the wholesale cut flower markets, as business was rushing between the holi- days, with many social affairs. Good business was reported by all the leading retailers and Cliristmas prices generally were maintained. New Year's business was not so heavy as that of Christmas. Still many say that decorations for watch-night parties used up considerable cut stock and plants. There was a shortage of short-stemmed roses, which were more in demand than the long, fancy stock, as prices were based on the length of tlic stem. This applied to Premier, Russell and Ophelia. Some splendid Richmond and Milady were noticed in last week's consign- ments. Carnations were still short of the demand and tlie few thousand that came in cleaned up early each day at high prices. The growers say that with a week of clear weather the supply will equal the demand at lower prices. New Y'ear's saw tlie last cut in chrys- anthemums when a good many left- overs came in. Sweet peas, usually plentiful at this time, have been scarce so far tliia season. Tliose, too, should be in big crop with a week of clear weather. Violets came in well last week, but the usual big crop failed tlie growers this year, with record prices at $4 per hundred for choice. Bulbous stock is exceedingly scarce this season.
