Thomas, one of the first settlers of Herriman, Salt Lakecounty, Utah, was born June 7, 1811, inthe town of Farmington, Kennebeccounty, Maine, son of Zechariah andMartha Butterfield. He was raised ona farm and his education was limited,In 1835 he first heard the fulness of thegospel and was baptized by JosephButterfield, his uncle. The followingyear he removed to Kirtland, Ohio,where he received his endowments inthe Kirtland Temple and was ordainedinto the 3rd quorum of Seventy in1838, at the time the Seventies removedas a body to Missouri in the famousKirtland Camp. He settled at Adam-. except when absent on a two yearsmision to Salmon river. He was thesecond presiding Elder of Herriman,and for a number of years the villagewas known as the Butterfield settle-ment, thus named in honor of himselfand family. He raised a large familyand lived to see his grown-up childrenpursue a course of righteousness in themidst of the Saints. Ripe in years El-der Butterfield died at his home in Her-rimaa in 1890, highly respected by allwho knew him. As a sample of hisgenerosity we may mention that whileliving at Kirtland, Ohio, he learnedthat the Prophet Joseph, on a certainoccasion, was very much in need offinancial assistance, when Elder But-terfield gave him all the money he had($100), for which the Prophet subse-quently blessed him and prophesiedthat he should never want for breadas long as he lived.
