It was built in 1771 by Lynde Lord, passed to hisson, Lynde Lord, Jr., who sold it to William Deming, thefather of Mrs. Ferry. On Prospect street, the Maxwell house, now owned byMrs. W. H. Maxwell of New York, was built in 1786 byReuben Webster. It was at one time the Congregationalparsonage, and the Rev. George Richards lived there whenpastor. On the corner of North street and Prospect stood theBeecher homestead, where Dr. Lyman Beecher, for sixteenyears pastor of the Congregational church, from 1810 to1826, made his home and reared his family. Henry WardBeecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe were born there, andboth received their education, the former his preparationfor college,
