Christopher Columbus ( 1451-1506), explorer and navigator in chains following his 3rd voyage - He is said to have kept the chains and requested they be buried with him. As 1st Governor of the Indies accusations of his tyranny and incompetence reached Spain . In 1500, the Crown had him removed as governor and he was arrested, and transported in chains back to Spain. After a royal enquiry, he was released after six weeks.
