As will be pointed out more in detail in the section deal-ing with disease of the heart muscle, in certain instances the PATHOLOGY 59 inflammation is not necessarily interstitial, but may primarilyattack the muscle fibers. Eecently Warthin has written a very interesting paper whichshould be read by any one interested in the pathology of syphi-lis. Warthin points out that microscopically the inflammationof syphilis is characteristic, and that the condition can fre-. In many instances there is but a mild degree ofthe characteristic perivascular infiltrate, not sufficient to call agranuloma, and yet the treponema can frequently be recognizedby the Levaditi stain.^^ 60 SYPHILIS Autopsy Findings in Syphilis From a study of the gross anatomy Symmers found in a studyof 4,880 autopsies performed at the Bellevue Hospital evidenceof syphilis in only 314 cases, or per cent.
