Mosaic floor in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II depicting the coat of arms of Rome with the Capitoline Wolf and the acronym SPQR, Milan, Italy

On the floor in the center of the Gallery are the coats of arms of Milan and the three historic capitals of Italy: Turin, Florence and Rome. The Capitoline Wolf is the symbol of the town of Rome, linked to the Roman tradition and mythology, according to which the founder of Rome, Romulus, was breastfed, along with his twin Remus, from this animal. It is in numerous statues and images depicted while nursing the twins. SPQR, an acronym for Senatus PopulusQue Romanus ("The Senate and the Roman People"), is an emblematic phrase referring to the government of the Roman Republic.
