Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858), American lawyer, newspaper owner and statesman, born at Harts Mill, North Carolina. Senator for Missouri. From 1824 Benton was a staunch supporter of Andrew Jackson. His nickname was Old Bullion because of his advocacy of hard money - currency backed by gold.
