This is notably the case at Claxheugh,where a splendid section is exposed on the south bank of theWear about two miles above Sunderland. Clear as the factis that here, the Marl Slate was disturbed and denuded beforethe deposition of the Magnesian Limestone on it, the uncon-formity is probably only a local one with no general signi-ficance (6). DESCRIPTION OF SECTION. The manner in which the Marl Slate and Compact Lime-stone terminate is shown in Section I. It will be seen thatthese two beds are present at the western end but absent fromthe eastern, and the manner in which they end is complicatedand peculiar. This can perhaps be only properly realised by EXPLANATION OF THE CLAXHEUGH SECTION. 215. , .m 2.—Photograph of disturbed masses 01 Compact Limestoneand breccia, of which a detailed section is given inSection 2. 2l6 EXPLANATION OF THE CLAXHEUGH SECTION, . mtuiTli-^.:-:7.\--^ *- ^ M Plj|li:l h -aI IP a. - H| 9- - - -llil; v:> - - ~~^fe- - - ~-H|| - - m - - m - Tijl-Ss ^ _ _ -WP z - o - ~ \ r^ -i: H _ _ - - -tfi^Jiiro CJ _ _ _ \ |\^;•; u — — V/• 00 - - - Wi^i LJ iri N O Q< H <;in H 55C ao b ^5 c -o • ^ B o U fa ^ 13 -s9 I w -I .S ^:3 I—I Td § ^ O O) cf to U g ^ 1-1 CJ o ? w o S o Td C/D Q O) ^ •n O s »cj k; c^ a =« .J Q ^ EXPLANATION OF THE CLAXHEUGH SECTION. 217 a visit to the actual exposure, but it is hoped that the sectionsand accompanying photographs portray as far as possible thereal nature of the section.
