Construction on the basilica began 1063. Following a Romanesque style, the basilica also incorporates Byzantine and Moorish elements. The city of Pisa was a strong naval power and the Piazza built to demonstrate the city's wealth and power. The basilica is dedicated to St Mary of the Assumption. Entrance is through massive bronze doors which carry illustrations from biblical stories. Interior of the basilica is truly impressive. The massive nave flanked by granite Corinthian columns. The interior is richly decorated with great Medieval art and mosaic. The pulpit is stunning.
