The entomologist's text book : an introduction to the natural history, structure, physiology and classification of insects, including the Crustacea and Arachnida . ding inthe tropics, but this (although it has received the name of(Estrus hominis) I should be rather induced to regard alsoas an accidental locality selected by the insect, instead of itsreal habitat. There is another tribe of insect enemies whoseattacks are not less annoying, although not resulting, likethe former, from a desire to feed upon our bodies. Hereare to be ranked the bees, wasps, and other insects providedvdth poisonous stings, which, however, they seldom employexcept in their own defence, or to resent injuries offeredto them. Here also may be added the spiders, whosepowerful jaws are equally provided with a poisonous fluid,as well as the scorpion, whose long and jointed tail is de-fended at the tip vvdth a powerful sting. Other insects are tobe ranked amongst our minor miseries, namely, those whichby the emission of a caustic or disgusting fluid, operatestrongly upon our olfactory nerves. But the tribes of insectswhich prey upon our cattle are equally numerous, including. Gasteropliilus equi. 1 - a Gasterophilus haeraorrhoidalis. fleas of different species, ticks, gadflies, forest flies, andespecially the remarkable family of (Estrideous flies, the ATTACKS OF INSECTS UPON PROPERTY. 21 larvae of some of which are ordinarily termed bots. In hkemanner our poultry and our bees are subject to the attacksof various insects, of which tlie Deaths-head moth and theGalleria are examples.
