To many men firing a boiler seems very simple and common work, yet how manj' can get up steam on short notice, say steam a tubular boiler from cold water in 15 minutes, or arrange a fire to burn slowly for a long period? Among the many men who have come and gone to fire, we do not recall one who was well posted in his duties. The proper way to start a fire in a hurry in a square fire box is to com- mence with perfectly clean grates; cover the grates with newspaper or packing paper—just a thin sheet to stop air currents and prevent waste of coal. Then commence filling the Tomatoes for Winter. Many growers are making quite a specialty of winter fruiting tomatoes now and the illustration herewith is from an excellent photograph taken at M. M. Miesse's, Lancaster, O., place of a newly planted house. Although the treatment of the planta is prac- tically the same as for the summer fruiters, considerably more care is necessary in the details.
