River Aln & Alnwick Castle: heavily restored Border fortress dating back to Norman times, home to the Dukes of Northumberland. Main restoration work carried out 1854-6 by the 4th Duke. Yvo de Vescy, first Norman Baron of Alnwick, built the earliest parts of the present castle around 1096. The Percy family owned the castle in the 1300s & Harry Hotspur was born here.
