18th century eclipse sermon. Page 3 of a sermon preached by Joseph Burroughs to the Society for the Reformation of Manners at Salters-Hall, London, UK, on Monday 28th June 1731. The Society for the Reformation of Manners was founded in London in 1691 with the aim of suppressing profanity, immorality, and other lewd activities, in particular brothels and prostitution. Eclipses were often viewed as omens from God and as a sign of distaste towards the behaviour of Man. This sermon was given in response to the total eclipse of the sun that occurred on 22nd April 1715. For the front page of this sermon, see image V700/0495.
