CAMP SMITH TRAINING SITE, CORTLANDT MANOR,NY - About three hundred Soldiers from the New York Guard, the state’s volunteer defense force, have been conducting their yearly week-long Annual Training program at Camp Smith Training Site which began August 15 and completes on August 20th. The New York Guard soldiers have been taking part in communications, staff coordination, engineering projects, Recruit and Retention training given by Army National Guard Recruiters, and individual skills training. The week-long training program will culminate on Friday August 19th with a supply point exercise which replicates distributing aid supplies during a state disaster response. The week of training is designed to replicate the alert and mobilization of state defense force volunteers for a disaster response role. The volunteers have been training for a variety of support missions, such as emergency communications, staging base support operations, chainsaw use and food service support. In addition, 40 Soldiers of the New York Guard will receive their initial entry training (IET) this week, providing new soldiers with the fundamentals of military drill and ceremony, customs and courtesies and basic skills. Another 20 current soldiers of the force will complete their attendance in their officer basic course, completing with receiving an Officer rank and positions of greater responsibility within the New York Guard. The training is official completed on Saturday the 20th, with a graduation pass and review ceremony on the Parade field, which recognizes the soldiers course completion and annual training participation.
