The Boulevard du Temple by Louis Daguerre. Taken in 1839 using his patented Daguerrotype process, this is believed to be the first ever photo to show a liing person. The slow shutter speed means that all the traffic does no show up but the shoe-shine man and his client are visible in the foreground. Daguerre was the inventor of the first ever publicly available photographic process. The process was avaiable in 1839, but was completely superceded within 20 years. The process was complex (and hazardous, inlvolving mercury vapour) and by 1856 much cheaper and easier methods were available.
