The work on this grand edifice, located at the intersection ofBroad and Market Streets, was commenced in 1871, and has cost, upto the present time (1882), over $8,000,000. It is surrounded bystreets from 136 to 200 feet wide, and a more admirable locationcould not have been selected. It is probably the largest building ofthe kind in the world. Its dimensions are 470 feet from north tosouth, covering an area, exclusive of the court-yard, of four and ahalf acres. The superstructure, of granite, is 18 feet in height, theprincipal story 36 feet, and an upper story of 31 feet, surmountedby another of 15 feet—the material above the basement story being 26 PHILADELPHIA TO-DAY white marble. There are grand staircases in each of the four cornersof the building, and one in each of the centre pavilions, also fourlarge elevators, placed at the intersections of the leading entire structure contains 520 rooms. It is absolutely fireproof. NEW CITY HALL. and indestructible. From the north side of the court-yard it is de-signed to erect a grand towTer, 90 feet square at its base, surmountedby a dome 50 feet in diameter, upon which is to be placed a colossalstatue of William Penn, making the tower 450 feet high, being thehighest in the world.
