Within this yard is the power housethat supplies the power for the entire electrical operation of the Long IslandRailroad and contains 32 boilers set in batteries of two boilers each witha capacity of 37,500 Horse Power, or 50,000 Kilowatts of electrical building has a capacity of double the present amount of machineryor 100,000 Kilowatts. work on the lines of the Long Island Railroad commencedin 1904 and electric service was started from Brooklyn to Rockaway Parkacross the Jamaica Bay trestle July 28, 1905; from Brooklyn to JamaicaAugust 30, 1905; to Belmont Park, October 2, 1905; Springfield Junction,October 16, 1905; and Valley Stream via Hammels and Far Rockaway,December II, 1905. On May 17, 1906, electric service was extended. On September 10, 1910, electric operation was inaugurated fromPennsylvania Station, Manhattan, to Jamaica and Long Beach; also viaGlendale cut-off to Rockaway Beach. On October 22, 1912, electric servicewas started from Pennsylvania Station via Flushing to College Point andWhitestone. Electric service will be started to Port Washington by theSpring of 1913.
