O provide Ottawa East with a street car service, a bridge with direct-lift span is being built over the Rideau Canal at Pretoria Avenue. The cost, 0,000, is divided equally between the Dominion Cioxernment and the city of Ottawa. The bridge consists oftwo 52-ft. 6-in. reinforcedconcrete arches and one 95-ft. steel lift span, makinga total length of 200 abutments. Thewidth is 56 ft. from railingto railing, the roadway be-ing 44 ft. wide, and each ofthe two sidewalks 6 ft. piling wasdriven, in 50-ft. lengths, fortiie foundation of the piles were tested toT7 tons per pile. A 1:3:5mixture is being used forthe abutments. The abut-ment walls are 7 ft. wide atthe base, iS in. at the the water line theabutments are being facedwith sandstone.
