Herethe Russians were defeated, and were compelled to fall back in the directionof their strong fortress, Sebastopol, at the southeastern extremity of thepeninsula. Here the war was focused. The Russians were strongly rein-forced late in the autumn, and Menshikoff united his divisions behind theworks of Sebastopol. On the 25th of September the heights of Balaklava,south of the Russian position, were seized by the British under Lord Raglan,and on the 9th of October the siege of Sebastopol was begun.
