Basal leaves on long petioles; stipules narrow, acute, 1' long or less; leaflets oblong, or some- what oblanceolate, obtuse, denticulate, 9"-2' long; heads long-peduncled, globose, i'-i4' thick; flowers purple or purplish, 6"-9" long, very short-pedicelled, the lower at length re- flexed ; calyx-teeth glabrous, linear-subulate, the longer nearly equalling the tube; pod 2-6- seeded. Eastern South Dakota, probably introduced from farther west. Native from Montana to Cali- fornia.
