When this picture was made on a sunny morning in May 1972, the 72–year–old Barclay was the oldest working steam locomotive in Britain. Five loaded trains traversed the gradient each shift and these comprised of fourteen wagons holding some 600 tons of coal. By positioning myself on the side of a huge slagtip I obtained a fine view of the bank and it was from here that picture were made.
