Dogfish skin. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the skin of a dogfish (Scyliorhinus sp.). The surface is covered in sharp placoid scales, which are also known as dermal teeth or denticles. The scales have a very similar structure to teeth, with a central pulp cavity that contains the nerves and blood vessels that is surrounded by a layer of bone-like dentine, which is covered by a layer of enamel. Magnification: x56 magnification when printed 10 centimetres across.
