One boat, herightly judged, had been lost during a night ofstorm, as thcA- were approaching the land. In search-ing for the other boats crew he fought his perilousand painful way, mile b}- mile, through the rigors ofperpetual winter and floating archipelagoes of icealong the Arctic coast for over five hundred miles,surviving the privations which had been fatal to somany, and persevered until his search was rewardedby the recoverv of all the records of the JeannetteExpedition. In the face of obstacles presented bythe worst season, he penetrated to the mouth of theLena in his search, and left no doubt that the un-fortunate crew of the third boat had not succeeded inreaching the shore.
