These conditions granted, hepromised at the end of ten years to give his Majesty amuseum which, however small, should be deserving ofthe name. He further obtained permission to establish aschool of fine arts. This was housed temporarily in abuilding belonging to the old palace, close to Chinili first public exhibition of the pupils of this school tookplace in 1888. The school is modelled after the Ecole des. WHITE-TURBANED SOFTAS. Beaux Arts of Paris, with its three departments of archi-tecture, sculpture, and painting; and, corresponding tothe Grand Prix de Rome, Hamdy proposed to establish aGrand Prix de IEurope, to enable the successful competi-tors to continue their studies at the great art centres of theworld. There is a stafT of four professors, with HamdyBey as responsible director, the responsibilities of that postbeing financially similar to those of the presidents of someinstitutions of learning in this country. The students num-ber somewhat over a hundred. Of these, the greater part 30 NIPPUR. are Greek and Armenian subjects of the Porte, but thereare also Turks among them, even including white-turbancd softas from the mosques, so far has barbarianprejudice already yielded to civilization in the capital ofthe Ottoman Empir
