Neitherthe Director of the Library (who admin-isters the Circulation as well as ReferenceDepartment) nor any employee of the Ref-erence Department is paid from public City pays nothing for the Central Cir-culation Branch and the Central ChildrensRoom on the Forty-second Street side of thebuilding. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT The Reference Department of the Libraryis in the Central Building, 476 Fifth maintains a collection numbering 1,469,521volumes and pamphlets, which are for con-sultation within the building only, and bythe terms of the gifts and endowmentswhich provided them, may not be borrowedfor home use. This collection includes lit-erature on all subjects of interest both to thegeneral reader and to the student, but it isespecially rich in American history, the eco-nomic and social sciences, the useful arts,music and the other fine arts, public docu-ments and official publications of govern-ments and states, and files of there are large special libraries, else-where in the City, devoted to law, theology,medicine and biology, not so much attempthas been made in tecent years to obtainpublications upon the subjects.
